Internet Backbone & BGP Engineering

BGP is the protocol that holds the internet together. We make sure your piece of it is engineered properly.

BGP Done Wrong Is a Liability. BGP Done Right Is Invisible.

The Border Gateway Protocol underpins every packet that crosses the public internet. It’s also one of the most complex, unforgiving, and consequential protocols in networking — a misconfigured route policy can leak prefixes to the entire internet, blackhole customer traffic, or expose your ASN to hijacking attacks in seconds.

At AMROTS, internet backbone and BGP engineering isn’t a niche we dabble in — it’s the core of what we do. We currently manage five ASNs for our clients, and we’ve spent years in the deep end of carrier routing, peering strategy, traffic engineering, and BGP security. We know where the bodies are buried — and we know how to make sure they stay buried

Why BGP Engineering Requires Specialists

BGP isn’t something you learn from a textbook and deploy on a Monday morning. The gap between a working BGP session and a well-engineered BGP policy is enormous — and the consequences of getting it wrong range from suboptimal routing to full-blown internet outages affecting thousands of end users. We’ve seen both. We fix both.

BGP Policy Design & Optimisation

From clean eBGP peering configurations to complex traffic engineering policies using communities, local preference, and MED — we design BGP policies that give you predictable, optimised routing across every transit and peer relationship.

ASN & IP Resource Management

We handle the full lifecycle of your ASN and IP resources — from initial registration with regional internet registries (RIRs), through to prefix management, ROA creation, and ongoing RPKI maintenance. We currently manage five ASNs for clients across the region.

Peering Strategy & IXP Onboarding

Good peering reduces transit costs, improves latency, and gives you direct control over how your traffic reaches its destination. We help you build and execute a peering strategy — identifying the right IXPs, negotiating peering relationships, and configuring route servers correctly.

Backbone Architecture & Capacity Planning

Whether you’re building a new backbone from scratch or scaling an existing one, we design core and distribution topologies that handle your current traffic load with headroom to grow — using Juniper MX/PTX, Cisco IOS-XR, and modern SR-MPLS and SRv6 architectures.

We Manage 5 ASNs — And Counting
Managing an ASN isn't a one-time job. Prefix hygiene, ROA maintenance, policy tuning, and peering changes need ongoing attention. We handle all of it for our clients so they can focus on their business.
RPKI Is No Longer Optional
Route hijacking and BGP leaks are real, well-documented threats. We implement RPKI with Route Origin Validation as standard on every backbone engagement — protecting your prefixes and your customers from malicious or accidental misdirection.
Juniper JunOS Specialists
Our backbone work is predominantly on Juniper MX and PTX platforms — the workhorses of carrier and internet exchange routing worldwide. We know JunOS deeply, and it shows in the quality and operational simplicity of every policy we write.
Our approach

How We Approach Backbone & BGP Engagements

Through experienced startup consultants who understand the isolated tasks necessary, a client can rely on a professional to manage a critical step in the early stages and focus on other items that need attention.

Audit & Assessment
Before touching anything, we want to understand exactly what you have. We review your existing BGP configurations, routing policies, prefix advertisements, peering relationships, and ASN documentation. What we find during this phase almost always reveals opportunities to improve — and occasionally, things that need fixing urgently.
Design & Policy Engineering
With a clear picture of your environment, we design or redesign your BGP policy framework — peering policy, transit policy, community strategy, traffic engineering levers, and failover behaviour. Every decision is documented with a clear rationale, and nothing is deployed until it's been reviewed and agreed.
Deployment, Monitoring & Ongoing Management
BGP changes are deployed carefully and methodically — changes to a live backbone require discipline and a solid rollback plan. Post-deployment, we monitor routing behaviour, verify traffic flows, and provide ongoing management of your BGP environment — tuning policies as your network and peering relationships evolve.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Some frequently asked questions about the service that you may have questions about

What types of clients do you work with for BGP engineering?
We work with ISPs, regional carriers, content networks, IXPs, and multi-homed enterprises. If you have an ASN, announce prefixes to the internet, or operate a backbone network — we have the experience to help.
Do you only work with Juniper equipment?
No — while our primary backbone experience is on Juniper MX and PTX platforms, we also work extensively on Cisco IOS-XR and other carrier-grade platforms. BGP policy concepts are largely transferable; it's the implementation detail that varies by vendor, and we know those details well.
Can you help us get an ASN and IP space?
Absolutely. We handle the full process — from determining whether you need an ASN, through to submitting registration requests with the relevant RIR (RIPE NCC for our region), and setting up your initial BGP configuration and RPKI ROAs.
What is RPKI and do we need it?
RPKI (Resource Public Key Infrastructure) is a cryptographic framework that allows you to prove you are the legitimate originator of your IP prefixes — preventing route hijacking and BGP leaks from misdirecting your traffic. In short: yes, you need it. We implement RPKI as standard on every backbone engagement.
Can you manage our BGP on an ongoing basis?
Yes — ongoing BGP management is one of our core services. We currently manage five ASNs for clients, handling everything from day-to-day prefix management to peering changes, policy tuning, and incident response.
What happens if something goes wrong during a BGP change?
Every change we make to a live environment has a documented rollback plan ready before we start. BGP changes on a production backbone are deployed carefully and incrementally — we monitor routing behaviour in real time and revert immediately if anything looks wrong.
